Are you potentially dealing with a sexually transmitted infection (STI)? First things first, try not to be worried or concerned. More than 1 million sexually transmitted infections are acquired every day and almost all of these infections can be treated and cured.¹ This means that it’s not uncommon, you are far from alone and if you test positive, your infection can be managed.

STIs are generally diagnosed by a healthcare professional who will discuss your sexual history, and symptoms and carry out a suitable test such as a blood test, urine test, and/or swab test. If you prefer to avoid the doctor’s office, the sample for these tests can also be collected from home with LetsGetChecked’s range of sexual health testing options.

How do doctors test STIs?

A visit to the doctor regarding an STI will generally involve an initial discussion regarding your sexual health history, your current symptoms, and a physical exam to look for signs of infection such as a rash, warts, or discharge.²

There are several types of testing that your doctor may consider to help with diagnosis, depending on the suspected infection, including:

  • Blood test for infections like HIV and syphilis
  • Urine test for chlamydia and gonorrhea
  • Swab test for herpes, HPV, and trichomoniasis

How do you check for STIs from home?

If you are experiencing symptoms or have been informed by a partner that they have a sexually transmitted infection, you should visit your healthcare provider.

When should you check for an infection?

Many STIs are renowned for not showing any signs or symptoms - making early detection and treatment vital to avoid any potential long-term consequences.

If STIs do show symptoms, some of the most common include: ²

  • Painful urination
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Itching or irritation on the genitals and/or anus
  • Unusual lumps or bumps around the genitals and/or anus
  • Change in color of the male or female discharge
  • Abnormal discharge in terms of smell, consistency, or volume
  • Strong vaginal odor

Keep in mind that regular testing is one of the best steps you can take toward ensuring you keep your sexual health and your partners a priority. So whether you have just become sexually active or have started a new sexual relationship, it’s always a good idea to check in.
